Normally, if you send email from your WordPress site, then the emails will go through the default mail function of WordPress which has a very low email deliverability rate and a high chance of email landing in the spam folder. So, it is always recommended to use an SMTP service for sending emails from WordPress.

If you have a Zoho Email subscription and would like to use it to send emails from your WordPress site, then in that case you would need to use an SMTP service and that’s where Fluent SMTP comes into play, which is available for free in the WordPress plugins repository.

Zoho will allow you to send a limited number of emails each day (a couple hundred on pro) in the function of your account reputation.

Steps to configure Zoho Mail with Fluent SMTP

1. Install FluentSMTP

You just need to go to Add Plugin and search for Fluent SMTP. This is a free plugin with a lot of nice features that are not available for free in any other SMTP plugins. Some of the notable features are – Adding Multiple SMTP connections, Email Log and Email resend features.

2. Configure Zoho Mail SMTP

Go into Zoho Account and create an application password. This is needed in Fluent SMTP. Save the password for the next step.

Next, you just need to go into Fluent SMTP Settings and choose Other SMTP. You have to configure Zoho mail using the Other SMTP option of Fluent SMTP as there isn’t a native integration. But nothing to get overwhelmed with, setting up the SMTP with the Other SMTP option would work perfectly fine.

At first, enter the From Email which should be the same email that you have used for your Zoho account. Enter a From Name that can be anything that you wish. After that, you use any of the two SMTP settings depending on the user type –

Outgoing Server Settings: (Personal users with an email address, username@zoho.com):

  • SMTP Host: smtp.zoho.com
  • Port: 465 with SSL or
  • Port: 587 with TLS
  • Require Authentication: Yes

Outgoing Server Settings: (Organization users with a domain-based email address, you@yourdomain.com):

  • SMTP Host: smtppro.zoho.com
  • Port: 465 with SSL or
  • Port: 587 with TLS
  • Require Authentication: Yes

The email address should match the email address/ email aliases of the account, for which the authentication details are provided.

You may require an Application-specific Password to set up the account on other devices if you’ve enabled Two-Factor Authentication. For more details regarding Zoho SMTP configuration, check out this guide.

  • SMTP Username – the username for zoho, or an alias you are using. (in some cases the username is the same as the account email)
  • SMTP Password – the application password that you saved in the previous step.

After entering all the information, click the Save Connection Settings. To test out the SMTP connection, you can send a test email from Fluent SMTP. Just select the Email test option from the top menu and send an email to any email address that you want. You will receive a test email in your inbox confirming that the SMTP is connection is working.

Fluent SMTP is a plugin developed by a company called WPManageNinja and this plugin is available completely for free. If you liked Fluent SMTP, then feel free to check out the other two popular plugins under the same ecosystem – Fluent Forms and FluentCRM.
